چکیده

INTRODUCTION Degeneration of the intervertebral discs cause discogenic low back pain and limited mobility. Current surgical treatments include spine fusion, which eliminates pain but does not restore disc function, or implantation of synthetic disc prostheses. However, these materials face challenges in fixation, mechanical strength and loosing of the implant [1]. Tissue engineering strategies may produce new promising treatments for intervertebral disc disease, using functional living tissues constructed from cells and scaffolds. Unlike articular cartilage, the intervertebral disc has two distinct regions, the annulus fibrosus (AF) and the nucleus pulposus (NP), each containing different cell type and extracellular matrix. The aim of the present study was to develop a nonwoven three-dimensional alginate felt for supporting annulus fibrosus cell growth.

Determination and comparison of specifics of nucleus pulposus cells of human intervertebral disc in alginate and chitosan–gelatin scaffolds

INTRODUCTION Low back pain is a major economical and social problem nowadays. Intervertebral disc herniation and central degeneration of disc are two major reasons of low back pain that occur because of structural impairment of disc. The intervertebral disc contains three parts as follows : Annulus fibrosus, transitional region, and nucleus pulposus, which forms the central nucleus of the disc....

A Structurally and Functionally Biomimetic Biphasic Scaffold for Intervertebral Disc Tissue Engineering

Tissue engineering offers high hopes for the treatment of intervertebral disc (IVD) degeneration. Whereas scaffolds of the disc nucleus and annulus have been extensively studied, a truly biomimetic and mechanically functional biphasic scaffold using naturally occurring extracellular matrix is yet to be developed. Here, a biphasic scaffold was fabricated with collagen and glycosaminoglycans (GAG...

An experimental study of the regeneration of the intervertebral disc with an allograft of cultured annulus fibrosus cells using a tissue-engineering method.

STUDY DESIGN Cultured annulus fibrosus cells within an atelocollagen honeycomb-shaped scaffold with a membrane seal were allografted into the lacunas of intervertebral discs of which the nucleus pulposus had been vaporized using an indocyanine green dye-enhanced laser. Regeneration of the intervertebral disc was assessed based on the viability and histologic status of the allografted annulus fi...

Repair and Regenerative Therapies of the Annulus Fibrosus of the Intervertebral Disc.

Degeneration of the intervertebral disc is implicated as the main cause of low back pain. Current treatment strategies for degenerative disc disease, such as conservative treatments and surgeries, only relieve the symptoms of low back pain without treating the causes of underlying degeneration. Surgical treatments cannot reverse the degeneration of the intervertebral disc degeneration, and may ...
